What does the laboratory do

Surface engineering, Characterization of the physicochemical properties of biomaterials for medicine, Studies of interactions between cells and the surface of materials, Development of technological applications taking advantage of the modification of the surface of materials.

Expertise

The research group of Prof. Gaétan Laroche specializes in solving problems related to the interaction of the surface with a particular environment. In other words, the laboratory’s mission is to adapt the surface of existing materials, in particular biomaterials intended for medicine (vascular or bone prostheses, heart valves, etc.), so that they can be better used in the context of an application. requiring adjustments to surface and interface properties (hydrophilicity, chemical or biological compatibility, cellular or mechanical adhesion, etc.). The projects are therefore focused on modifying the surface of materials over a few nanometers or a few micrometers in thickness and on the characterization of these materials from a physico-chemical point of view and in interaction with the biological environment. The strategies developed may involve an internal surface modification of the material or even a deposition of thin layers on its surface. In the surface engineering laboratory, these treatments can be done both using traditional chemical methods or using more innovative technologies using plasma.

Service(s) offered in research and development (R&D)

Scientific consultation, resolution of surface and interface problems, small-scale proof of concept and development assistance, determination of the physicochemical properties of materials, evaluation of the cellular response in the presence of materials.
